Nine Seventeen Prabhavathi Meppayil

This catalog was published to coincide with the exhibition nine seventeen at the American Academy in Rome (April 2 – May 11, 2014) and subsequently at Pace London (26 June – 2 August, 2014). 

Prabhavathi Meppayil's (b. Bangalore, India 1965) art practice draws on traditional craft and values the truth of materials and tools as well as simple forms, colours and shapes. Lines are a leitmotiv in Meppayil's work and corresponding with Minimalist principles, she expresses the necessity of a work that comes back to the pureness and essence of the material. Meppayil's pieces combine artisan practice and modernist concerns using recurring features such as walls and floors on which she repeats lines and intermissions.
