Published in conjunction with her homonymous survey exhibition at Pirelli HangarBicocca, Metaspore is the most extended monography ever dedicated to Anicka Yi. One of the most radical artists of the last decade, she creates sculptures and installations that explore possible new definitions for the categories of natural and synthetic, giving shape to hybrid and symbiotic entities. The volume presents critical essays by Giovanni Aloi, art historian, and Rachel Lee, professor of English literature and gender studies, a conversation between Anicka Yi and Merlin Sheldrake, biologist and writer, and two contributions by the exhibition curators. The catalog includes an original “cosmology” conceived in collaboration with the artist’s studio: a glossary of her most significant fictional, scientific, and philosophical references. Besides an in-depth photographic documentation of the show, “Metaspore” contains the complete exhibition chronology of Anicka Yi, together with detailed entries of the works on display at Pirelli HangarBicocca.
