On the occasion of Remai Modern’s inaugural exhibition Field Guide, co-curated by Gregory Burke and Sandra Guimarães, Ryan Gander was invited to curate an original presentation of the museum’s Picasso collection. The resulting project, Faces of Picasso: The collection selected by Ryan Gander, emerged from Gander’s belief that to understand Picasso, one must first come to understand Picasso’s representation of the self.
Ryan Gander chose to respond to 406 linocut prints by Pablo Picasso, held in Remai Modern’s permanent collection. Donated to the museum in 2012 by the Frank and Ellen Remai Foundation, this significant collection is the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. This book collects Gander’s inquisitive and laborious undertaking to re-interpret each linocut.
Picasso and I embodies central aspects of Remai Modern’s mission, which is to investigate the idea of what is modern from multiple cultural, historical and contemporary perspectives. Text contributions include a forward by Gregory Burke, an introduction by Ryan Gander and an interview between Ryan Gander and critic Jonathan P. Watts.
