Introduction

Karin Sander's works arise from reflection on the institutional and spatial conditions of art and often fit so perfectly into their respective contexts that they are sometimes not noticed at first glance. A fine example of this is Identities on Display, 2013: 18 showcases set up as cloakrooms or lockers in the foyer of the Kunsthalle Nürnberg.

The security rules in museums require larger bags, backpacks, umbrellas or coats to be locked up or left at the cloakroom. Karin Sander's lockable showcases fulfil the purpose of safekeeping, but allow private objects to be viewed. Thus, the everyday utensils brought along by visitors become exhibition pieces that allow conclusions to be drawn about their person, their gender, their individual preferences, their social status or even their cultural background.
