Introduction
Johnen Galerie is showing Paintings by Martin Creed for Gallery Weekend. The exhibited paintings, as well as all works of the artist who works in various media such as film, photography, sculpture and music, move between clear, generally understandable structures and the game of chance.
The 'ingenious' author resigns, as theoretically anyone could implement the works according to his instructions, which makes the work deeply democratic and in its execution gives room for play, practice and selection.
Some of the canvases are densely filled with horizontal strokes of color that lead into each other, others show stair-like stacks of brushstrokes of different thicknesses or color runs arranged in zig-zag. The palette ranges from basic or non-colors such as red and black on a white ground to multi-colored compositions. It seems that each brushstroke was applied with a different stroke, rhythm and timbre. The paintings often show a joyful lightness, but they are always objective reflections on art and thus lead far beyond the field of abstract painting.
