Introduction
The exhibition Pierre opens following Matti Braun’s residency in Morocco in April 2009. This first research residency led the artist to travel between Morocco (Fez, Rabat, and Casablanca) and Senegal (Dakar) in the footsteps of the personality of the Germany sculptor Arno Breker, controversial for his collaboration with Hitler and the Nazis. Breker worked for King Hassan II of Morocco and President Léopold Sédar Senghor of Senegal in the 1960s and 70s.
Matti Braun’s practice gives great importance to the formulation of narratives, based in the archive and inedited histories, using his own photographs as much as images found in historical or private archives. The poetic and visual approach proposed in this project also reveals a political aspect of a history that is often unwritten.
