Introduction

The exhibition In the sweet years remaining is a coherent work: the "multimedia" wall functions as a display, stage and architectural quotation for half-hearted and open isolation. The ambivalent attempt to paint on the beauty and façade fails, as does the super-generation, to gain insight into the foreground through a glimpse behind the scenes.

A psychologized concept of space and installation. In the front not without the back, but both not really satisfying. With Rondinone, a space (architecture) always refers to a subject and here psychological states come into play in the space, here the viewer is involved in the narrative play of the installation.

The 70 black-and-white photographs are the result of a shoot with a little girl in the swampy Swiss mountains threatened by snowmelt. The music recording Plus de Liaison is on a loop and is broadcast by the All-In-One module of the whitewashed wooden wall and the 9 loudspeakers embedded in it.

The formal play between the black and white world on the front of the wall and the colored theatre lamps behind the wall marks a tension that has to do with Rondinone's hybrid view of the world, and articulates his interest in theatricality in relation to the authentic.

Ugo Rondinone's forthcoming exhibitions in 1999 include the Venice Biennale (June) in the Swiss Pavilion (together with Pipilotti Rist and Sylvie Fleury) and the Istanbul Biennale (September).
