Introduction

There Exists Another Evolution, But In This One,  is a solo exhibition by Korean-American artist Anicka Yi, marking her first and most comprehensive museum presentation in Asia. Anicka Yi is known for her use of organic and ephemeral materials such as bacteria, scents, and tempura-fried flowers to delicately capture the nuances of human emotion and sensation. Building on her sensory explorations, Yi’s practice also investigates the boundaries of intelligence, challenging anthropocentric perspectives by centering the experiences and insights of non-human entities like machines, fungi, and seaweed. The exhibition title draws inspiration from the enigmatic nature of Zen Buddhist koans, reflecting a meditative and spiritual shift in Yi’s recent work. Offering rare insight into her latest projects, the exhibition also features a selection of earlier pieces, providing a comprehensive introduction to Yi’s distinctive artistic universe.
