General Idea AIDS (Red), 1989/2021
Powder coated stainless steel
70 x 70 x 35 cm (sculpture)
90 x 70 x 35 cm (plinth)
In response to an invitation to create work for the Art against AIDS benefit in 1987, General Idea appropriated the colors and stacked letter design of Robert Indiana’s widely quoted LOVE (1966), re-configuring it to read “AIDS.” Meant to be placed outdoors, especially in front of an institution, the AIDS sculpture was originally intended to accrue graffiti, and to act as a record of ongoing public dialogue. In 2021, an indoor powder-coated steel edition of the AIDS sculpture was produced, based on a 1989 drawing by General Idea.
