In Untitled (1973), Douchez’s inclinations towards music and mathematics are evident. While the colors reference the lush flora of Brazil, the work is laid out on a strict geometric grid and the irregular organic forms are strictly confined within two harmonious spheres. The spheres seem to orbit each other, to exchange matter, yet they are framed by regular, nearly symmetrical lines. There is a rhythm to the piece, underscoring the artist’s interest in the mechanics of music, and lending it a feeling of movement that complements its structure.
