Martin Boyce Like Snow, 2023
Martin Boyce Like Snow brings together major themes of the artist's practice. The work combines a wooden panel painted in blues, greens and black in which small holes have been neatly drilled with custom-made white steel letters affixed to its surface. Set in a steel frame, the work fuses sculptural qualities with nods to the tradition of panel paintings, as well as to the linear quality of how text appears on a page.
The newly developed typography of custom-made hand-painted steel letters now includes slightly curved shapes. The stylized alphabetical lettering, which spells the words "Like Snow", constitutes a new formal development based on the font the artist had conceived in 2006, in the course of his engagement with Jan and Joel Martel’s Concrete Trees, exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris.
