Martin Boyce For 1959 Capital Avenue (While you are waiting things are changing shape), 2002/2017
Powder-coated steel, brass
2 x chairs (80 x 80 x 80 cm each)
4 x vents (49,7 cm x 24,5 cm each)
1 x wall mounted ashtray (12,5 x 4,6 x 5,8 cm)
1 x mobile (243 x 135 x 130 cm)
Alluding to the appropriation of modernist ideals into the aesthetic of mid-twentieth century corporate design, Martin Boyce has created an ensemble recalling a fictional lobby. Two chairs, without seat, a wall-mounted ashtray and four vents are combined with a new mobile. The vents, dispersed throughout the booth, add another layer of architectural reference: their four-word motto--Punching through the Clouds--refers to an expression by architect Mies van der Rohe. For 1959 Capital Avenue (While you are waiting things are changing shape) is a variant of the large-scale installation conceived in 2002 for the artist’s first solo exhibition in Germany at the MMK acquired for its permanent collection.
