Years And Stars And Storms consists of perforated steel lanterns suspended from a chain running zigzag through a room. When installed, the total of eight electrified lanterns — in black, yellow, red, and green — are distributed over three sections of chain: two carry three lanterns, and a third two. A recurring motif in Boyce's work, the metal lanterns refer both to the traditional shape of Chinese lamps and lanterns and to the forms based on his engagement with the Martel brothers' trees. In addition, the bright open-work metal of the lanterns refers to Mathieu Matégot, who introduced this material to furniture design in the 1950s.
