Martin Boyce Dead Star Constellation (above a lake), 2014
The mobile combines elements from urban and semi-domestic settings. Sections of rusted steel chain hang in different groupings from a metal rail, freed from their function as instruments of demarcation. Three elements made from small circular metal sheets suspended horizontally by much smaller, rather delicate chains hang appear within the other hanging chains, reminiscent of decorative tassels or even miniature bird feeding devices, constructed from unlikely elements of urban decay. The open-work metal of the small discs obliquely refers to the designer Mathieu Matégot, who introduced this material to furniture design in the 1950s.
