Tao Hui's film features a group of amateur actresses and their instructor going through a number of increasingly dramatic exercises. Eventually one of them, who appears visibly pregnant undergoes labor, dies and is cremated on site. With its hyper-dramatization The Acting Tutorial draws on a recurring theme in Tao Hui's work: the manipulation of emotions in popular television and film productions.
