Roman Ondak's work Affinity is installed in a corner, the wooden blocks with a metal clasp in effect connecting the adjacent walls. Affinity is characteristic of Ondak's practice of using found objects to great effect: often the objects are removed from their former function--as in this case where the locking device no longer fastens two parts--and this loss of function can give them a melancholy. At the same time, in their new surroundings they powerfully evoke a previous existence in another location, making them markers of lived experiences.
