Roman Ondak Two Hands, One Broken, 1995
66,2 x 88,5 x 4,5 cm (framed)
The work is based on illustrations found in medical textbooks. The artist selected individual drawings, depicting sets of hands caring for others and then drew onto each gesture a circle in India ink. Ondak has used text books as inspiration for a number of works, most recently in 2016 for Awesome Rules of Language. Such books are sources of knowledge which is inflected through its representations. Isolated from its source and with the addition of a black circle, the intended message of the drawing becomes lost and its meaning is in flux.
