The work is from the Liu Ye's series of paintings begun in 2013, depicting books as central subject: almost completely filling the picture plane, the two rectangular pages echo the shape of the canvas. The book in Book Painting 7 is depicted at a slight angle, thus on the lower left and the upper right the motif is slightly cropped. Opened, yet without any visible writing or marks, the arch of the folding page is modulated in shades of grey. Book Painting 7 is from a three-part group of paintings in shades of grey of which one is lighter, one almost black and this one, grey. To the viewer of the painting the depicted book is always upside down.
