Daniel Steegmann Mangrané Summer Cloud, 2017
Minimum room dimensions: 315 x 400 x 400 cm
Summer Clouds is part of Daniel Steegmann Mangrané’s ongoing series of brightly colored aluminum works. Depending on the site the dimensions of the work are variable and can be between 320 x 650 x 900 cm (minimum dimensions) and 450 x 1050 x 1300 cm (maximum dimensions). The work consists of a sequence of two curtains made from individual chains that include differently shaped forms lined by a metal border. The "continuation" of the curtains below the openings appears counterintuitive, adding an element of surprise. Although the white frames and the work's title suggests an association with clouds, the forms cut into the curtains are not intended as concrete representations but relate to the artist's idea of "model forms," familiar but non-specific shapes. Loosely based on the architecture of the modernist architect Richard Neutra, the sequence of curtains evokes a mid-twentieth century open-plan building. In a further allusion to an imaginary architecture.
