Julia Scher Time Wafer for Outer Space, 2023
ø 100 cm
The work is an aluminum tondo powder-coated in Julia Scher's signature pink color, equipped with a video title maker and a large vintage camera.
Playing on the traditional format of panel paintings, the work also refers to the shape of satellite dishes and the idea of transmission. The use of obsolete technology is a poignant reminder of the speed at which technology fades. Yet, at the core of course is Julia Scher’s continuous exploration of surveillance. Here the cameras can serve as deceptively outmoded lures in juxtaposition to more contemporary surveillance structures in which cameras are not clunky but rather discreet and hidden.
