Julia Scher Glückshaube, 2006
Hand-carved from rose-colored marble, "Glückshaube" is based on the shape of a crossing guard's cap, made iconic in Julia Scher's series "Security by Julia". Initially part of an outdoor installation that marked the route on which German Jews were escorted to the train station in the city of Wiesbaden, the work explores layers of historical associations.
The title, "Lucky Hoods "("caul", lat."caput galeatum"), refers to a popular belief, that the fine protective skin, which covers the scalp of some babies shortly after birth, is said to bring good luck. Yet by way of associations with its English translation, it refers to the subject of surveillance: the transparent coat worn by the character Henry Caul, a surveillance expert in the classic Francis Ford Coppola film "The Conversation" from 1974.
