Mechanized heliostats: lacquered steel, mirrors, filters, motors, control box, cabling
Dimensions variable
Heliotropes consist in three mechanized heliostats controlled by a computer program. These motorized colored mirrors redirect sunlight and create dynamic colored light beams.
Each heliostat is anchored by three custom-made lacquered steel feet—giving them the appearance of alien-like insects—while a color-filtered mirror (red/orange, blue, or yellow) captures the sunlight and casts its colored reflection onto “targets”, to reach specific areas of the building where the sun would never go.
Heliostats have appeared in previous exhibitions: for instance, at the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai, in 2017, they were installed on the rooftop and created a carefully arranged sun choreography.
