Solo for Ayumi was conceived on occasion of Ari Benjamin Meyers' 2017 solo exhibition at Esther Schipper. Earlier that year, the two artists decided that Paul would write about her life in preparation for Solo for Ayumi. She later turned extracts of the text into letter form and from the approx. thirty letters she created, Meyers chose twelve to which he responded by inscribing them with a multi-part score, composing both a musical portrait and abstraction of the violinist. Every day for the duration of the exhibition, Paul was present in the gallery space, enacting Meyers’ interpretation of her life on her violin.
