Isa Melsheimer Case 15, 2023
Drawing on Isa Melsheimer's ongoing refinements of her ceramics practice, this new series, entitled Case, presents wall-mounted ceramic panels. Each panel has a distinct surface created by a combination of directed and accidental effects created by her experimentation with glazes. The unforeseen and aleatory is the very nature of the process of glazing as unpredictable chemical reactions produce unique variations in color and in texture that cannot be replicated. The new series has a painterly quality, reinforced by its installation on the wall.
The title, Case, obliquely refers to the work's rectangular shape (boxy or, in German, kastenförmig) but also invokes the notions of research and experimentation with its affinity to the term case study.
