Isa Melsheimer Horse’s Head from the chariot of the moon goddess Selene II, 2021
Ceramic, glaze
55 x 72 x 29 cm
The cast of the ceramic horse’s head is based on a famous Greek sculpture dating to circa 438 BCE, from the Parthenon’s tympanum depicting the chariot of the moon goddess Selene on the Acropolis in Athens. Glazed, the work is strikingly naturalistic, reinforced by the addition of the horse’s ears, an element missing from the Greek source.
