Gabriel Kuri I Collate, I Convey, I Comply (05), 2015
Green Anröchter stone, chipboard plinth, assorted objects
68 x 55 x 55 cm (sculpture), 63 x 55 x 55 cm (plinth)
I collate, I convey, I comply is one of Gabriel Kuri’s first in-the-round stone sculptures, further developing the formal language of his earlier more two-dimensional marble sculptures which are presented parallel to the wall.
This work is made from a hard compact limestone called Green Anröchter stone, which is mined exclusively in Germany, where the artist produced this body of work. The roughly square block of stone has been cut, carved and chiseled, both by machine and by hand. The custom-built plinth is part of the work.
The sculpture’s combination of curves and flat planes link a man-made, linear quality with one reminiscent of naturally occurring rock crevices. This tension between made and found characteristics is further emphasized by the variations of their surface texture, chiseled to degrees of varying smoothness and polished to a matt sheen in places. The stones have a totemic quality but carry it with a hint of ironic detachment.
The work weighs 550 kg approx.
