Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster Belle Comme le Jour, 2012

Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Tristan Bera's collaborative film Belle Comme le Jour alludes to Spanish filmmaker Luis Bunuel's Belle de Jour (1967). Bunuel's film stars French actress Catherine Deneuve as Séverine, a housewife who decides to work as a prostitute during the day. Gonzalez-Foerster and Bera's film presents a story that takes place before Bunuel's begins. The film's narrative is simultaneously in dialogue with the Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira's Belle toujours (2006), a sequel to Belle de Jour. Gonzalez-Foerster and Bera's piece adds dimension, depth and backstory to the character of Séverine, who appears in all three films.
