Ceal Floyer Throw, 1997
Profile-spot theatre lamp, light mask
Dimensions variable
Edition of 5 plus 2 artist's proofs
One of Ceal Floyer's important early light projection works, Throw is characteristically self-reflective of its medium. A theater light on a full-size stand projects what appears as a cartoon 'splodge' motive onto the floor. The shape taken from stock cartoon imagery where it has myriad uses—representing, for example, spilled fluids, any kind of impact, or smashed cartoon figures—is created by light, that is, in the English terminology of light projection, it is "thrown" onto the floor. Combining its visual reference to a two-dimensional drawn reality with the verbal play on the self-referentiality of its title, the work is both thoughtful and funny.
