The image shows a parquet floor with snippets of colored paper on the right side. The paper clearly seems to be left over: one can see that shapes have been cut-out from rectangular sheets. The top of the images shows the trestles of a drafting table and the fragments of tables and stools adds context, the central topic of the motif is the juxtaposition of the parquet’s largely monochromatic, regular pattern with the brightly colored irregular snippets of paper. The image is based on photographs showing Henri Matisse in his studio at the Hôtel Régina in Nice. Largely immobilized, the aging artist produced paper cut-outs in this studio from 1949 until his death in 1954. While he had begun “drawing with scissors” already in the mid-40s for a book project, his studio in Nice allowed for large-scale works to be produced.
