Angela Bulloch Target Slap Happy Bag, 2023

Target Slap Happy Bag is a large bean bag—a massive sack made of thick fabric filled with styrofoam pellets—that is both a sculpture and can be used as a seat. A hand-made image sewn onto an attached label is machine-readable with Bulloch’s specially produced mobile application, AB_AR, and links to a digital animation. The digital animation depicts the text of another work by Angela Bulloch, Pythargoras Theorem, 2023, a work from the artist's Rules Series.

Angela Bulloch first conceived Happy Sacks for a solo exhibition in 1994. In subsequent exhibitions the works were often displayed in a setting where seating is usually required and sometimes paired with other works (audio or video pieces), highlighting the artist’s emphasis on the interaction of viewers with her works and also the integration of technological innovation into her practice.
