the endless is from a series of wooden window frames, often painted in bright colors, set with panes of glass.

The window is one of a number of common domestic objects, including doors, brick walls, light bulbs and clocks, that Rondinone has used as a motif over the course of his thirty-year long career.

In creating windows that restrict rather than facilitate a greater understanding of what lies beyond them, Rondinone generates a type of paradoxical viewing experience that is typical of his work. The windows are symbolic of sight and of discovery. While they frame no external view, the evocative title of each work in the series encourages the onlooker to use their imagination to project their own idea onto the obscured panes of the work. Far from restricting our vision, Rondinone's Windows encourage us to look deep into the mind's eye.

"I think about the art as two groups of works. They are either about looking inside or about looking outside. They are either inspired by nature or get their inspiration from one's inner world. So you have two groups that don't relate to one another: one with its eyes closed and looking inward; the other group of images look to nature. For instance, with the self-reflective windows, the closed doors and brick walls, or even the passive figures that don't engage with the viewer, are all about turning to the interior." - Ugo Rondinone
