Ugo Rondinone vierzehnterseptemberzweitausendundfünfzehn, 2015
Acrylic on canvas
270 x 520 x 3 cm
Existing on the frontiers between fantasy and reality, vierzehnterseptemberzweitausendundfünfzehn, 2015, is a mesmerizing union of some of the central tropes within Rondinone’s diverse practice. More than five meters wide and nearly four meters tall, it is a strikingly immersive work. Beginning with yellow, concentric semi-circles of vivid rainbow color radiate out from a dense black center, creating the illusion of the arches receding into a deep, dark tunnel. Each band of color appears unfocussed and hazy, as though they are emanating from pulsating neon tubes. In fact, the work is executed in acrylic paint meticulously applied using a spray can, so that the edges of each color blur smoothly into the black background.
