Annette Kelm's Versuchsanstalt für Wasserbau und Schiffbau depicts, in a frontal shot, a building located in Berlin's Tiergarten district. In the foreground lies a wintry barren landscape, its trees and branches obscuring a clear view of the building in the background.  The brightly colored structure stands out against the gray landscape. The building is a hybrid architectural structure built by German architect Ludwig Leo (1924-2012) in 1974. It functions itself as a machine and scientific equipment. Evenly lit and precisely rendered, Kelm's composition gives the building a sculptural quality but also invokes the tradition of landscape photography.
