Rosa Barba Weavers, 2022
35 mm film, steel frame, rotating motor
170 x 127 x 2 cm (66 7/8 x 50 x 3/4 in)
The panel of woven film stock that make up this work is in constant movement. Suspended from the ceiling, the panel is being turned by a motor under the ceiling, creating a slow rotation.
Woven around a thin steel frame from horizontal and vertical strips of celluloid, similar to how cloth or tapestry is made, the crisscrossing of the surface has a sculptural quality. The small holes along the edge of the film continue to draw attention to the function of the material--it is how the film is held and transported by projectors.
As the panel rotates slightly, light hits its surface, a play of reflections and refractions that subtly animates the work's immediate surroundings.
The rotating motor is not included in the sale price.
The work weighs 8 kg.
INSTALLATION SPECIFICATIONS:
– The rotating motor and spotlights are to be purchased separately according to the space requirements.
– The rotating motor is not required.
– If installed, the rotating motor is preferably concealed in the ceiling.
– Spotlights should be installed on 4 sides of the work.
