Jac Leirner Metal Wood Black, 2017
Jac Leirner’s Metal Wood Black consists of 66 rulers made from different materials, in multiple lengths, and a variety of widths. Aligned horizontally by their center, the rulers are installed in a vertical sequence at regular distances. Despite their apparent disparity, the various materials and lengths create a mysteriously dynamic yet apparently orderly rhythm, reminiscent of a musical notation. The artist first began assembling larger numbers of store-bought materials, such as levels or rulers, during her artist in residency at the Yale School of Art in 2012.
