Jac Leirner Woman & Man, 2014
118 x 124 x 8 cm (red part)
142 x 30 x 7 cm (blue part)
Assembled from ready-made materials, Jac Leirner’s Woman & Man plays on the recognition of human anatomical characteristics. Cheeky and innocent at the same time, and with great economy of forms, the work uses short-hand visual signs to impel the observer to identify the two shapes as representations of woman and man. The recognition, despite the blatant dissimilarity to human figures, can be a point of departure to question the codified representations of gender ubiquitous in everyday life.
