Leaning against the wall, Ann Veronica Janssens’ 2020 Umbrella both appears casually placed and, with its luscious golden sheen, exudes a regal quality. A thatched roof with a feathery crown made from grasses, the work’s entire surface has been covered with gold-leaf. The sculpture is from a body of works that refer to the power of the sun. The use of gold leaf in this context symbolizes different aspects of solar energy which can both give warmth but also burn.
