Ann Veronica Janssens Blue Papegaai, 2010-2017
120 x 60 x 60 cm
The work consists of a cube glass container on a grey pedestal. The glass is about two thirds filled with paraffin oil. Except for the very light greenish tint created by the thick glass the liquid is colorless and transparent when viewed from the side. As one approaches the work or moves around it, the surface of the oil appears to be bright blue. The effect is created by the insertion of a serigraph under the bottom of the glass tank. The principle of diffraction gives the impression that the serigraph is floating at the surface.
Blue Papegaai belongs to an ongoing series started in 2010 which varies in sizes and colors; 13 additional colors have been produced so far: yellow, dark blue, iridescent, light blue, bright green, fluorescent green, orange, pink, magenta, purple, gold, and clementine.
