Simon Fujiwara Who's Childhood (Moving Target), 2022
173,6 x 143,5 x 8 cm (framed and glazed)
Who's Childhood (Moving Target) is from Simon Fujiwara's series of works recreating iconic art works by famous, historically significant artists through the perspective of his original cartoon figure Who the Bær.
In this artwork, drawing on the work Amor Vincit Omnia (Victorious Cupid) by the Italian Baroque artist Caravaggio, Fujiwara superimposes features of Who onto the figure of the cupid. Who’s mouth is open with their large tongue exteneded and dripping various yellow liquids. The figure is dressed in jeans and a printed target is placed on their chest area hinting to the subtitle of the work Moving Target. The figure is balancing on one leg with their arms raised, in a gesture that suggests surrender or an attempt to blance.
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (29 September 1571 – 18 July 1610), known as Caravaggio, was an Italian painter active in Rome for most of his artistic life. His work Victorious Cupid, depicting a very common subject for the time, stood out from the others due to the unususal realistic depiction of the cupid.
