Simon Fujiwara Fabulous Beasts (Winter Fox), 2015
Shaved sections of vintage fur coat on wooden stretcher
120 x 90 x 2,6 cm
The series Fabulous Beasts is made from vintage fur coats. The coats are first deconstructed into its tailor pattern parts before being shaved to reveal the archaeology of its production including manufacturers stamps, patchwork detail, dye marks and skin diseases, blemishes and the handwriting of the producers, in effect communicating its own production story not as narrative or information but through its own perverse sensuality. The title of the series, fabulous beasts, refers to the hybrid beings often found in medieval tapestries: fantastical and fable-like animals, often even mixtures of human and animals.
